Masters Kim and Song were very keen to teach more than standard TKD material and taught a wide variety of kwan jyel sool (joint locks), ho sin sool (self defence), weapons, internal methods and advanced techniques which they had acquired throughout their training in Korea. The material was systematised so that it could be more readily taught and to ensure the material was also healthy and invigorating.
In about 1978, the material was presented under the name Hwa Rang Tae Kwon Do when it was focussed on Tae Kwon Do training - WTF tournament preparation, restricted techniques for junior classes, and omitting more dangerous methods of application. It was presented under the name Hwa Rang Do when it was taught as a martial art without restriction. Due to the dangerous nature of techniques, teaching of the more dangerous was limited to students of good character and maturity.
Master Song retired to business in the mid 1980s and Master Kim continued to develop his art from what he had learned. Normally he practiced 2 hours a day in private apart from teaching classes every day. In 1995, Master Kim bought a spacious full time gymnasium at 133 Stephen St, Lalor Park (Blacktown) in Sydney's South West. There are classes by Master Kim or senior black belts in many location in Sydney, Newcastle, Queensland, New Zealand and (I think) Melbourne.
The names Hwa Rang Do and Hwa Rang Tae Kwon Do are registered in Australia to the Australian Hwa Rang Do Academy. There is, and has never been any imputation that the martial art taught by the Australian Hwa Rang Do Academy is the same as, or is sanctioned by any other organisation. In particular, no claims of association are made about the World Hwa Rang Do Association's style, techniques, history or achievements.
